Find your North Star and make sure all roads point towards it.
Every community has a magic moment. That initial "aha." That crucial unlock. It's not just your first impression. It's your entire foundation.
What's your One Thing?
For barbecue sellers, it's the first perfectly grilled meal. For Apple, it's the unboxing experience. For fitness communities, it's proof of that first workout.
Your entire onboarding process should drive toward this single moment. Relentlessly. Don't dilute your focus. Don't scatter your attention. Pour everything into delivering your One Thing.
Make it visible. Make it celebratory. Make it meaningful. Your veterans should proudly display it like a badge. Your newcomers should hunger for it like a prize.
This creates a beautiful community dynamic. For new members, it's aspirational. For existing members, it's reputational. For you as the builder, it's directional.
The temptation to do more is real. There's always just one more thing you could add to your onboarding. Resist.
Your top priority isn't impressing members with how much you offer. It's delivering that One Thing so perfectly they can't imagine life without it.
Only after delivering the One Thing do you earn the right to show them what's next.
